Disney+ Sports Documentary Series
Matildas: The World at Our Feet is a six-part Disney+ documentary series following Australia’s women’s national football team as they prepare for the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup.
The series follows the players on and off the pitch, exploring the commitment, pressure and personal sacrifices involved in competing at the highest level. Featured players include Sam Kerr, Ellie Carpenter and Mary Fowler.
I worked as UK Director of Photography, filming UK-based material that contributed to the wider international production.
UK Director of Photography
My role involved creating a visual approach for the UK filming that would integrate naturally with footage captured across the wider series.
The production combined carefully composed interviews with supporting documentary footage. Consequently, the cinematography needed to feel polished while retaining the honesty and immediacy expected from an access-led sports documentary.
Throughout the filming, I worked closely with the production team to plan camera positions, lighting and coverage. This helped create visually consistent material while allowing contributors the space to tell their stories naturally.

Sony FX9 Documentary Cinematography
The UK material was captured in UHD using the Sony FX9. Its full-frame sensor, professional recording formats and built-in variable ND made it well suited to both controlled interviews and responsive location filming.
For the interview sequences, the lighting needed to remain natural and flattering while matching the visual character of the international footage. Meanwhile, the supporting coverage helped establish the contributors, locations and wider context of their stories.
My experience across factual television and contributor-led productions allowed me to adapt the camera and lighting package around each location. Further examples can be viewed on my factual showreel.
International Production and UK Crew Support
The finished series brought together footage filmed across several countries as the Matildas prepared for the World Cup. Therefore, the UK photography needed to work as part of a consistent international visual language.
Working with NEO Studios, I supplied the UK cinematography and Sony FX9 camera package required for the filming. This provided the international production team with one coordinated point of contact for its UK camera and equipment requirements.
If you need a UK DOP, camera crew or filming package for a sports documentary or international television production, please contact me to discuss your project.
