I’m James Melrose, an experienced self-shooting producer director working across factual television, documentaries, branded content and contributor-led productions throughout the UK.
I combine editorial judgement, production planning and professional camera skills within one flexible role. This allows me to research stories, develop ideas, direct contributors and capture high-quality footage without the need for a large location crew.
Factual and Documentary Storytelling
My approach begins with the story. I work closely with producers, contributors and clients to identify the strongest narrative, plan interviews and decide which sequences are needed to bring the subject to life.
During interviews, I create a relaxed environment that helps contributors feel comfortable on camera. I listen carefully, respond to their answers and ask natural follow-up questions. As a result, the finished production gains more honest, detailed and engaging material.
Shooting with the Edit in Mind
As an experienced camera operator and Director of Photography, I bring a strong visual approach to self-shooting productions. I consider lighting, composition, movement, continuity and natural sound throughout the filming day.
I also shoot with post-production in mind. Therefore, I capture the cutaways, sequences, establishing shots and supporting details needed to build a complete edit.
Flexible Production Support
I can support a production from early research and pre-production through to location filming and post-production. This may include contributor calls, location planning, interview preparation, shooting schedules and story development.
Unlike my separate director service, this role combines producing, directing and operating the camera. It is particularly suitable for documentaries, factual television, case studies, observational films and smaller location crews.
I work across Newcastle, Manchester, London, Glasgow and nationwide. View examples on my factual showreel or contact me to discuss your production.
