A bit about the shoot

As Director of Photography on this project at Liverpool’s training ground, my focus was on creating a dynamic visual style that worked seamlessly for Liverpool training ground FC Mobile shoot 9×16 delivery, while still maintaining a cinematic edge. The brief called for a fast-paced, 60-second cut featuring three players, including Hugo Ekitike, so efficiency and precision were essential.

I designed the camera setup around flexibility. We ran with two Sony FX9s in landscape with a 9×16 crop, each paired with a 70–200mm lens to deliver roaming singles and isolate player movement with a cinematic shallow depth of field. To complement these tighter shots, I introduced a Sony FX3 in portrait mode, equipped with a 16–35mm Sony G Master for wide coverage. This combination gave us both dynamic close-ups and expansive vertical frames, while also ensuring native 9×16 capture that reduced the need for cropping in post and preserved image quality.

All footage was captured in UHD at 25p using the XAVC-I codec with S-Log3 Cine, monitoring in s709, maximising dynamic range and colour latitude. This gave us the flexibility in grading to balance studio light conditions while still delivering vibrant tones and cinematic contrast. The FX9s brought precision and depth to the singles, while the FX3’s wide coverage provided context, grounding the narrative and tying the sequences together.

For the Liverpool training ground FC Mobile shoot 9×16 the lighting relied on the press room environment of the training ground, which we leaned into to retain authenticity and the club’s atmosphere. In post, the S-Log3 Cine workflow allowed us to push contrast, colour, and detail, achieving a polished and modern finish.

Final thoughts

Composing for 9×16 required thinking vertically — building frames that guided the eye up and down rather than side to side. Combined with fast, snappy editing, the result is a piece that feels cinematic, engaging, and optimised for Instagram’s audience.
