I’m James Melrose, an experienced UK Director of Photography working across commercials, television, documentaries, branded content and corporate productions.
I collaborate with directors, producers, agencies and clients to develop a clear visual approach for every project. From early planning through to filming, I help shape the lighting, composition, camera movement, lens choices and overall look of the production.
Cinematography and Visual Storytelling
My role is to translate the creative brief into engaging images that support the story. I begin by considering the audience, platform and intended tone of the film.
During pre-production, I can support creative treatments, location planning, equipment selection, shot lists and lighting designs. This gives the production team a practical visual plan before filming begins.
UK Director of Photography for Commercials and Television
As a UK Director of Photography, I have experience across studio and location productions. My work ranges from polished commercial campaigns to factual television, documentaries and contributor-led films.
On set, I work closely with the director while leading the camera, lighting and grip teams. I aim to create a calm and collaborative environment where technical decisions support performances, interviews and unfolding action.
My experience includes work for BBC Sport, The BRIT Awards, Charles Worthington, St Tropez and a range of independent production companies.
Camera and Lighting Packages
I can provide professional Sony cinema camera packages, lenses, lighting, audio and grip equipment when required. Alternatively, I can work with equipment supplied by the production or rental company.
