Outsiding is an outdoor entertainment series and podcast produced by Cold Glass Productions. It is hosted by Caitlin Moran and Adam Frost.
The programme combines relaxed conversations with a strong connection to gardens, wildlife and the natural environment. Celebrity guests join the hosts to discuss their experiences of spending time outdoors.
I worked as Director of Photography on the pilot and several episodes. During these productions, I helped establish the programme’s visual style and practical filming approach.
Natural Outdoor Cinematography
The aim was to create a warm and inviting look. However, the cinematography also needed to support the informal nature of each conversation.
Filming outside creates several technical challenges. For example, daylight can change quickly throughout a recording. Weather, background movement and environmental noise can also affect production.
Therefore, camera positions and compositions were planned carefully. This helped maintain consistent coverage while still making full use of each garden location.
The natural surroundings were an important part of the programme. As a result, the framing gave the presenters and guests space within the environment. Soft backgrounds and natural textures also helped create a relaxed visual style.
Establishing a Repeatable Visual Style
The multi-person format required reliable coverage of each conversation. In addition, the cameras needed to capture natural reactions and unplanned moments.
I worked closely with the director and production team to develop the camera positions and shot choices. Consequently, the edit had strong coverage without disrupting the flow of the discussion.
The cinematography needed to feel polished but not overly formal. Ultimately, the visual approach supported the programme’s mix of factual entertainment, personal conversation and outdoor storytelling.
