As a documentary cameraman and Director of Photography in the North East, I film factual television, contributor-led documentaries and real-life stories. I work with broadcasters, production companies, producers and agencies across the UK.
I can join an established team as a DOP, lighting cameraman or camera operator. For smaller crews, I can also work as a self-shooting Producer Director. This flexible role combines editorial responsibility with professional camera operation and location sound.
Observational Filming and Interviews
Documentary filming often involves unpredictable situations and moments that cannot happen twice. Therefore, I use a calm and unobtrusive approach to capture authentic actuality. This helps contributors feel comfortable and allows real events to unfold naturally.
My coverage can include observational filming, contributor sequences, formal interviews, establishing shots, cutaways and natural sound. For interviews, I create polished lighting and considered compositions without overwhelming the contributor or location.
In addition, I always shoot with the edit in mind. I capture complete sequences, visual details and natural transitions so editors have greater flexibility in post-production.
Factual Television Experience
My experience covers observational, access-led, historical, music and character-driven documentaries.
For example, I worked as a Shooting Producer Director on Ambulance for BBC One. I filmed with the North East Ambulance Service across Series 9 and 10.
I have also worked as DOP on The Secret Life of the Zoo for Channel 4. Other factual credits include Ash Cloud: The Week the World Stopped for Channel 5.

Camera, Lighting and Sound Equipment
My main documentary camera package centres on the Sony FX9. The compact Sony FX3 can support second-camera, gimbal and restricted-space filming.
Moreover, I can provide professional lenses, LED lighting, location sound equipment, grip and camera support. I can also add licensed drone filming when aerial establishing shots would strengthen the story.
Every production has different practical and creative requirements. Consequently, I can tailor the package for either a solo self-shooting role or a larger factual television crew.

From my South Shields base, I cover Newcastle, Gateshead, Sunderland, Durham, Northumberland, Middlesbrough, Teesside and the wider North East.
