Ambulance – BBC One

I worked as a Shooting Producer Director on Ambulance, the BAFTA-winning observational documentary series for BBC One. Dragonfly Film and Television produced the programme, which follows ambulance crews, control-room teams and patients during demanding frontline shifts.

My BBC Ambulance Shooting PD role covered Series 9 and 10. I filmed with the North East Ambulance Service during 2022. IMDb currently credits me under “Filmed By” across five episodes broadcast during 2022 and 2023. On the production, however, my working role was Shooting Producer Director.

Filming Ambulance required a sensitive, adaptable approach to factual television production. Each shift developed in real time, without warning and in pressured environments. I needed to follow unfolding events while recording actuality, strong sequences and personal moments. Each element helped support the story.

The role combined editorial judgement with confident handheld camerawork and location sound recording. I filmed with the Sony FX9 throughout. Working independently meant making quick decisions while respecting contributors, patients and the operational needs of emergency crews. The production also required careful awareness of consent, privacy and the difficult circumstances facing everyone involved.

This self-shooting role demanded strong communication with contributors and production teams throughout every shift. It also required reliable technical preparation, because opportunities could not be repeated once an emergency response had begun.

The North East series followed call handlers, dispatchers and frontline teams as they responded across the region. Cameras captured the journey from the first emergency call to the arrival of crews. They also captured the care provided on scene.

Ambulance forms part of my factual television portfolio. Other credits include The Secret Life of the Zoo and MOTDx for BBC Sport. I work across Newcastle, Manchester, London, Glasgow and throughout the UK.
