Ash Cloud: The Week the World Stopped – Channel 5

I worked as one of the Directors of Photography on Ash Cloud: The Week the World Stopped. ITN Productions created the feature-length factual documentary for Channel 5. The 68-minute programme revisits the volcanic ash crisis that brought European aviation to a standstill in 2010.

Documenting the Week the World Stopped

The documentary explores the eruption of Iceland’s Eyjafjallajökull volcano and the disruption that followed. Flights across Europe were grounded, leaving millions of passengers stranded and creating an unprecedented challenge for the aviation industry.

The Met Office explains how the eruption produced fine ash capable of travelling long distances through the atmosphere. The programme examines how this natural event quickly developed into an international travel crisis.

As one of the project’s DOPs, my contribution needed to complement the wider programme’s established visual style. The photography also had to communicate complex events clearly while supporting the experiences of those affected.

A Cinematic Factual Approach

Historical documentaries need to combine accurate information with engaging visual storytelling. Therefore, I used considered compositions and controlled, natural-looking lighting to create polished factual television images. The approach helped maintain visual consistency while keeping the storytelling accessible and authentic.

Working alongside the wider production team also required flexibility across different contributors, locations and filming situations. Each sequence needed to provide the editor with strong visual material while remaining focused on the documentary’s central narrative.

This collaborative approach helped each sequence sit naturally within the finished programme. It also strengthened the documentary’s wider account of an extraordinary international crisis.
