Lighting Cameraman Northumberland

I’m James Melrose, an experienced freelance lighting cameraman covering Northumberland. I provide professional camera operation, location lighting and production support for documentaries, factual television, branded content, interviews and corporate films.

Based in South Shields, I’m within easy reach of locations throughout south and central Northumberland. I can travel across the wider county for productions requiring an experienced camera operator with local knowledge and a complete filming package.

Camera and lighting support in Northumberland

Combining camera operation and lighting within one role provides a practical option for productions working with smaller crews. This approach is particularly useful for interviews, documentary sequences and location-led projects where the team needs to move efficiently.

I regularly provide camera and lighting support for:

  • Documentary and factual television
  • Corporate interviews and customer stories
  • Tourism and destination content
  • Branded and social media productions
  • Commercial films
  • Rural and coastal filming
  • Observational sequences and supporting footage

Depending on the brief, I can operate the camera, light interviews, record location sound and capture supporting sequences. For larger productions, I can work alongside a dedicated sound recordist, camera assistant, second operator or lighting team.

Sony FX9, FX3, lighting and sound equipment

My principal camera is the Sony FX9, supported by the compact Sony FX3. Together, they provide a flexible setup for interviews, documentary filming, multicamera productions, gimbal work and commercial content.

Available equipment includes Sony G Master lenses, professional tripods, production monitors, radio microphones and shotgun microphones. I can also provide Aputure LED lighting, soft modifiers and grip equipment for interviews and location filming.

In addition, insured drone filming can be included when aerial footage suits the location and production. I hold an A2 Certificate of Competency and carry appropriate commercial drone insurance. All flights remain subject to suitable weather, landowner permission and relevant airspace restrictions.

I tailor the package around each production rather than bringing unnecessary equipment. My six-seat production vehicle can transport crew, cameras, lighting and sound equipment between locations throughout Northumberland.

Filming across Northumberland

I cover Morpeth, Alnwick, Bamburgh, Hexham, Cramlington, Blyth, Ashington, Berwick-upon-Tweed and the surrounding towns, villages and countryside.

Northumberland offers a distinctive mixture of historic buildings, castles, coastline, rural landscapes, market towns, forests and industrial locations. These environments can provide exceptional settings for documentary, commercial and branded productions.

However, rural and coastal filming requires careful preparation. Remote locations may have limited access, restricted parking, changing weather and few nearby power supplies. Some coastal locations can also be affected by tides and strong winds.

My local base helps visiting producers plan realistic travel times and choose an appropriate camera and lighting package. Where necessary, I can reduce the equipment footprint to reach locations that are unsuitable for a larger crew.

Productions requiring help with locations, permissions or local authority contacts can approach the North East Screen Film Office.

Northumberland filming experience

My regional work includes directing and shooting Dacia’s Britain Off-Road, a nine-part social series following adventurer George Bullard across the UK.

The journey began on Holy Island in Northumberland. Filming involved capturing presenter-led sequences, vehicle footage, landscape shots and supporting material while working to a demanding location schedule.

Productions in Northumberland often need to respond quickly to changing weather, access and natural light. I can adjust the camera and lighting setup throughout the day while maintaining a consistent visual approach.

For interviews, I consider the contributor, background, available space, existing light and surrounding noise. Examples of different setups can be found on my Interview Examples page.

Whether the production involves a carefully lit interview, tourism campaign or fast-moving documentary sequence, I aim to create professional images while keeping the filming process efficient and unobtrusive.
