Director of Photography & Lighting Cameraman in Newcastle

I’m James Melrose, a Director of Photography and lighting cameraman based in the North East. I work across Newcastle, Tyne and Wear, Northumberland, County Durham and throughout the UK.

I film commercials, branded content, documentaries, television programmes and corporate productions. Because I’m based in the North East, I can provide valuable local knowledge and practical production support. At the same time, I’m well connected for shoots across the country.

Director of Photography services in Newcastle

As a UK Director of Photography, I work closely with directors, producers, agencies and clients. Together, we develop a clear and consistent visual style for each production.

My involvement can begin during pre-production. For example, I can advise on cameras, lenses, lighting, locations and the overall visual approach.

On set, I oversee both the camera and lighting departments. However, I remain flexible to the needs of the director, contributors and production schedule.

I can lead a larger camera department as a dedicated DOP. Alternatively, I can work hands-on as a lighting cameraman within a smaller crew.

Commercials, branded content and corporate films

I regularly shoot commercials, branded films, interviews, social content and corporate productions. Recent projects include work for Dacia, Sky Sports and FC Mobile. In addition, my wider experience includes productions for broadcasters such as the BBC and Channel 4.

Every brief needs a slightly different visual approach. For example, some productions require controlled lighting and carefully planned camera movement. Meanwhile, others benefit from a natural and unobtrusive filming style.

You can view examples of my work in my cinematography portfolio.

Documentary and factual television

My documentary experience includes observational filming, contributor-led stories, interviews and location-based productions. Because factual filming can move quickly, I’m comfortable reacting to developing situations.

I can also work within small crews and changing schedules. As a result, I can capture authentic moments without disrupting the story.

For example, my factual credits include working as Director of Photography on The Secret Life of the Zoo. The popular documentary series was produced by Blast Films for Channel 4.

Camera, lighting and production equipment

My principal camera package is built around the Sony FX9. Additionally, the Sony FX3 is available for second-camera, gimbal and compact shooting requirements.

I use Sony G Master zoom lenses alongside a selection of fast prime lenses. Depending on the production, I can also provide lighting, sound and camera-support equipment.

I can supply a complete camera and lighting package for smaller productions. Alternatively, I can work with equipment provided by the production team. I can also help source additional kit and experienced local crew.

In addition, I’m available as a camera operator. I can also provide insured drone filming when required.

Filming across Newcastle and the North East

The North East provides a varied range of locations for film and television production. Newcastle and Gateshead offer modern architecture, historic streets and distinctive riverside locations.

Meanwhile, South Shields, Tynemouth and the Northumberland coast provide beaches, cliffs, castles and open landscapes. County Durham and Teesside offer further rural, heritage and industrial settings.

As a result, productions can achieve several different visual styles within one region. This variety can also help reduce travel between locations.

The official North East Screen location service helps productions explore locations across the region. For filming within the city, Newcastle City Council provides filming and permit guidance.

My knowledge of the region can help with practical production decisions. For instance, I can advise on access, travel times, changing weather and the position of natural light.

Available across the UK

Alongside my North East base, I regularly work from Manchester, London and Glasgow. Therefore, I’m well placed for productions across the UK.

Whether you need a Newcastle DOP, lighting cameraman or camera operator, I can tailor my involvement to your production. Camera, lighting and drone packages can also be supplied when required.
