Sony has officially introduced the FX5, a new full-frame Cinema Line camera positioned between the compact Sony FX3 and the more production-focused FX6.
As a freelance Director of Photography who already owns and regularly uses the Sony FX3, the FX5 immediately caught my attention.
My FX3 forms part of a wider Sony camera and lighting kit that I use across commercial, branded-content, documentary and corporate productions. It is particularly useful for gimbal work, smaller camera builds, multicamera interviews and situations where my larger Sony FX9 would be impractical.
The newly announced FX5 appears to retain much of that compactness while adding a fully stacked sensor, 5K Open Gate recording, internal X-OCN RAW, improved monitoring tools and a more professional Cinema Line operating system.
However, it also costs substantially more than the FX3, requires a new battery and accessories, and leaves out some of the production features found on the FX6 and FX9.
So, is the Sony FX5 a genuine upgrade from my Sony FX3, and who is it actually for?
This article is based on the official Sony FX5 announcement, published specifications and released footage. I have not yet used a production FX5, so this is an initial professional assessment rather than a complete hands-on camera test.

Sony states that the FX5 records 5K at up to 60fps and 4K at up to 120fps at launch. The heavily promoted 5K 120fps and cropped 4K 240fps modes will require a future firmware update.
That distinction is important. Anyone considering buying the FX5 specifically for its headline high-frame-rate modes should check Sony’s latest firmware information before making a purchase.
A new stacked full-frame sensor
The biggest difference between the FX5 and FX3 is not simply the increase from 4K to 5K.
The FX5 uses a newly developed 16.6-megapixel, fully stacked, full-frame Exmor RS CMOS sensor combined with Sony’s BIONZ XR2 image processor.
A stacked sensor can read information more quickly than the non-stacked sensor used in the FX3. In practical shooting situations, that should reduce rolling-shutter distortion when filming fast movement, operating handheld or shooting from moving vehicles.
Sony has not published detailed rolling-shutter measurements, so I would want to see independent testing before reaching a final conclusion. However, faster sensor readout could be one of the most practically important improvements for documentary, commercial, sports and action-based filmmaking.
Sony claims more than 15 stops of latitude when filming in S-Log3. Although the FX3 carries a similar dynamic-range claim, the FX5’s newer sensor and processing could potentially produce cleaner shadows, smoother gradation and a more controlled transition into highlights.
Those characteristics matter more to me than the additional resolution alone.
A camera can capture plenty of theoretical dynamic range but still produce harsh highlight clipping or unwanted colour contamination in its shadows. The real test will be how the FX5 behaves in difficult mixed lighting, strong daylight and underexposed environments.
5K Open Gate is a major advantage
The FX5 is the first camera in Sony’s FX series to offer full-frame Open Gate recording.
Rather than restricting the recorded image to a conventional 16:9 or 17:9 area, Open Gate uses the full 3:2 sensor area. Sony provides a detailed explanation of the available recording modes on its official FX5 product page.
For my work, this is probably one of the strongest reasons to consider the FX5.
Productions increasingly require several versions of the same content. A brand might need:
- a traditional 16:9 master
- a 9:16 version for Instagram Reels or TikTok
- a 4:5 social edit
- a square crop
- several shorter campaign cutdowns
Open Gate gives an editor more vertical image area and significantly greater flexibility when creating those different versions from the same shot.
It does not remove the need to compose carefully for each delivery format. Important subjects still need to remain within agreed framing guides, particularly when a production is creating landscape and vertical content simultaneously.
This is something I have previously had to consider on projects such as the Bupa Inside Health interview series, where the footage needed to allow for alternative social-media crops.
Open Gate should make that process considerably easier.
It is also valuable when using anamorphic lenses. The FX5 includes monitoring support for 1.3x, 1.5x, 1.6x, 1.8x and 2x anamorphic squeeze ratios, allowing operators to view a correctly proportioned image while filming.
There is an important limitation at launch: Open Gate recording is initially tied to X-OCN recording. Anyone planning to use Open Gate with a lighter XAVC workflow should check whether Sony has expanded codec support through a firmware update.
Internal X-OCN RAW
The FX5 can record Sony’s 16-bit scene-linear X-OCN RAW format internally using X-OCN LT and the more compressed C1 and C2 options.
This is a considerable step beyond my Sony FX3, which can output 16-bit RAW over HDMI but requires a compatible external recorder.
Sony has published further technical information about the format on its official X-OCN recording technology page.
Internal RAW means:
- fewer cables
- less weight
- fewer mounting accessories
- no separate recorder battery
- a cleaner and more compact camera build
For commercials, visual-effects work, high-end branded films and productions requiring extensive colour grading, internal X-OCN could be extremely useful.
It brings a workflow previously associated with considerably larger Sony cinema cameras into a body that is only slightly larger than the FX3.
However, RAW is not automatically the right choice for every production.
For interviews, corporate films, factual television and fast-turnaround content, the additional storage and post-production requirements may offer little practical advantage.
The FX3’s internal 10-bit 4:2:2 XAVC files remain more than capable for a large percentage of professional work. The value of X-OCN therefore depends heavily on the production, budget, delivery requirements and post-production workflow.
Three base ISO settings
The FX3 has always been particularly useful in low light because of its ISO 800 and ISO 12800 base sensitivities.
The FX5 retains those options but introduces a third base setting at ISO 4000.
That middle setting could be genuinely useful.
There are many situations where ISO 800 requires more lighting than is practical, but ISO 12800 is unnecessarily sensitive. ISO 4000 should provide a useful middle ground for:
- available-light interiors
- night exteriors
- events
- documentary filming
- poorly lit locations
- fast-moving factual productions
For me, the addition of ISO 4000 is more practically useful than simply increasing the camera’s maximum available ISO.
Sony has also introduced Dual Gain Shooting, which is designed to maximise latitude while reducing noise in the shadows. Its availability depends on the selected resolution and frame rate, so it will not necessarily be available in every recording mode.
Better monitoring and professional controls
One of the compromises of very compact cameras is that their monitoring tools can feel closer to those of a mirrorless stills camera than a dedicated cinema camera.
The FX5 addresses this with a larger LCD, waveform monitoring, false colour, histogram, Focus Map and a more professional operating system influenced by cameras further up the Sony Cinema Line.
False colour and waveform monitoring are particularly welcome.
These tools make it easier to judge:
- skin-tone exposure
- highlight retention
- shadow levels
- lighting consistency
- exposure matching between cameras
This is especially valuable when working quickly on location and when matching several cameras during a multicamera interview.
The FX5 also supports an optional detachable OLED viewfinder for exterior and handheld work.
However, the viewfinder occupies the Multi Interface Shoe and cannot be used at the same time as the new XLR handle. That feels like an avoidable compromise, particularly for documentary operators who may reasonably want both an eyepiece and professional audio inputs.
Improved autofocus and stabilisation
The FX5 uses Sony’s BIONZ XR2 processor with integrated AI processing.
It can recognise human, animal and bird subjects and uses up to 759 phase-detection autofocus points.
My FX3 already has extremely dependable autofocus, so I would not expect a revolutionary difference during controlled interviews or slower-paced filming.
The improvement should become more noticeable when:
- tracking people through busy environments
- working with a very shallow depth of field
- filming unpredictable action
- following contributors during documentary sequences
- operating in low light
- moving between several potential subjects
The in-body stabilisation system has also been updated.
The FX5 adds Dynamic Active stabilisation alongside standard and Active modes. Dynamic Active introduces a greater crop, but it may be useful for lightweight handheld filming where a gimbal, shoulder rig or Easyrig would be impractical.
I regularly work across a mixture of handheld, gimbal, tripod and shoulder-mounted configurations, examples of which can be seen in my behind-the-scenes cinematography gallery.
For that kind of varied production work, improved stabilisation is useful—but it would not replace proper camera support when the brief requires deliberate, controlled movement.
New batteries and accessories are a drawback
Although the FX5 looks very similar to the FX3, existing FX3 owners will not be able to transfer every accessory across.
The FX5 uses the new NP-SA100 battery rather than the widely used NP-FZ100 used by the FX3.
Sony claims improved continuous recording time, but existing FX3 batteries will not be compatible. For an owner with several NP-FZ100 batteries, that adds to the real cost of changing systems.
The mounting points have also changed, which means many existing FX3 cages may not fit.
The FX3’s XLR-H1 audio handle is not compatible with the FX5 either. The FX5 requires the new XLR-H2 handle, which supports up to four-channel, 96kHz, 32-bit float audio.
That is a valuable improvement for self-shooters and smaller crews, but it also means investing in another camera-specific accessory.
The true upgrade cost is therefore not simply the difference between the price of the two camera bodies. It may also include:
- new batteries
- a new charger
- a replacement cage
- a new XLR handle
- additional CFexpress Type A media
- revised power and rigging accessories
For someone with an established FX3 setup, those additional costs need to be considered carefully.
No electronic variable ND or SDI
The FX5 does not replace the FX6 or FX9 as a traditional production camera.
It has a full-size HDMI output, Ethernet connectivity and timecode support, but it does not offer SDI output or Sony’s built-in electronic variable ND filter.
For fast-moving documentary, factual and corporate work, electronic variable ND can be more valuable than Open Gate or internal RAW.
It allows the operator to maintain a selected aperture, shutter speed and depth of field while quickly adapting to changing light levels.
Using a front-mounted variable ND filter or matte box is perfectly manageable, but it is less immediate and can make a compact camera rig considerably larger.
This is why I see the FX5 as a more advanced compact cinema camera rather than a smaller replacement for the FX6 or my FX9.
Is the Sony FX5 worth upgrading to from my FX3?
For some Sony FX3 owners, absolutely.
The strongest reasons to upgrade are:
- 5K Open Gate recording
- internal X-OCN RAW
- a faster stacked sensor
- three base ISO settings
- waveform and false-colour monitoring
- improved stabilisation
- more advanced subject-recognition autofocus
- a more professional Cinema Line interface
- greater flexibility for landscape and vertical delivery
However, the FX3 remains an excellent camera.
It records high-quality full-frame 4K at up to 120fps, offers strong low-light performance, reliable autofocus, 10-bit 4:2:2 internal recording and an extremely compact body.
For owners primarily using the FX3 as a B-camera, gimbal camera or compact companion to an FX6 or FX9, the improvements may not justify replacing batteries, cages and audio accessories.
Sony launched the FX5 at approximately £4,700 body-only or £5,200 with the new XLR handle. The latest pricing and availability can be checked through the official Sony FX5 store page.
At that price, it needs to provide a meaningful production advantage rather than simply being the newest camera in the range.
My initial Sony FX5 verdict
The Sony FX5 looks like one of the most significant additions to the Cinema Line since the original FX3.
It is not simply an FX3 with a higher-resolution sensor.
Open Gate, internal X-OCN, improved monitoring, three base ISO settings and a more cinema-focused operating system move it towards a different level of production.
For commercial, music, documentary and branded-content filmmakers who want advanced recording options in a small camera, the FX5 could become an extremely useful tool.
My main reservations are:
- the lack of electronic variable ND
- the absence of SDI
- the need to replace several FX3 accessories
- the new battery system
- the restriction of Open Gate to specific recording modes
- the delayed availability of some headline frame rates
Would I immediately sell my FX3 and replace it with an FX5?
Probably not without first testing the two cameras side by side.
My FX3 already fits extremely well into my current production kit, particularly as a compact second camera alongside the FX9. It produces a strong image, matches the wider Sony Cinema Line effectively and remains useful on gimbals, car rigs and smaller handheld setups.
Would I consider the FX5 as a higher-quality compact camera to sit alongside my Sony FX9 and existing FX3?
Definitely.
The real test will be whether the improvements in highlight roll-off, shadow colour, rolling shutter and overall image character are clearly visible during normal production—not simply when comparing specifications.
