Beyond the Scorecard is a five-part sports documentary series produced by Sunny Side Up Media for Sky Sports Golf.
The series follows amateur golfer Josh Simpson as he travels across the UK. His goal is to break the world record for the most golf courses played in one year. Along the way, he meets people whose lives have been transformed by the sport.
I worked as a DOP on Beyond the Scorecard Episode 4. My contribution focused on the Newcastle sequences featuring Matthew “Murph” Murphy, the lead singer and guitarist of The Wombats.
During the sequence, Josh and Murph play crazy golf and discuss their experiences of the sport. In particular, Murph explains how golf has helped him manage anxiety and depression.
The completed episode also features former Liverpool goalkeeper Chris Kirkland and former England footballer Paul Merson. Their stories explore addiction, recovery and the positive role that golf has played in their lives.
Sports Documentary Cinematography
The Newcastle filming combined active gameplay with an open and personal conversation. Therefore, the cinematography needed to remain responsive as the contributors moved around the location.
Rather than separating the interview from the activity, the sequence allowed the conversation to develop naturally. This approach helped the contributors feel relaxed while also creating visually varied documentary coverage.
Movement, changing backgrounds and the pace of the game all influenced the camera work. However, the personal story remained the central focus throughout the sequence.
The filming also required a discreet approach. Genuine reactions and small exchanges were just as important as the wider action. As a result, the camera needed to capture spontaneous moments without interrupting the conversation.
Beyond the Scorecard demonstrates how sport can provide an accessible route into deeper human stories. The finished episode combines golf, music and football with honest conversations about mental health and recovery.
