Welcome to Wrexham – Season 2

Welcome to Wrexham is an acclaimed sports documentary series following Wrexham AFC, its supporters and the wider community surrounding the historic Welsh football club. Produced by Boardwalk Pictures for FX, the series follows Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds as they navigate football club ownership and pursue an ambitious new future for Wrexham.

I worked as a Director of Photography on Season 2, contributing to the cinematography across the series’ documentary coverage.

Season 2 follows Wrexham AFC through a defining campaign as the club attempts to secure promotion back into the English Football League. Alongside the action on the pitch, the series explores the personal stories of players, supporters, staff and people living within the town.

Emmy-Nominated Cinematography

My contribution to Season 2 formed part of the series body of work nominated for Outstanding Cinematography for a Reality Program at the 2024 Primetime Emmy Awards.

The Television Academy nomination recognised the work of the wider cinematography team responsible for capturing the scale, emotion and unpredictability of the season. My official nomination and Director of Photography credit can be viewed on the Television Academy website.

Sports Documentary Cinematography

Productions such as Welcome to Wrexham require a responsive and story-led approach. Sporting events, observational sequences and contributor-led moments can develop quickly, so the camera team must capture authentic material without disrupting what is happening.

The cinematography needed to support both the excitement of professional football and the more intimate human stories at the heart of the series. Working within a larger documentary camera team meant maintaining a consistent visual approach while reacting independently to unfolding events.

The complete series is available to watch on Disney+, while more information about the production is available from Boardwalk Pictures.
