Breaking the Band – REELZ

I worked as Director of Photography on Breaking the Band, a music documentary series produced by Potato for REELZ. The programme explores the rise and fall of some of the world’s best-known bands. Each episode examines the relationships, creative pressures and personal conflicts that changed the group’s history.

Cinematography Across 12 Episodes

I received cinematography credits across 12 episodes released in 2021. The series combines first-hand testimony, expert insight, archive footage and dramatic reconstruction. Together, these elements bring audiences closer to the decisions and events behind each band’s success and eventual breakdown.

As DOP, I created polished, cinematic images for contributor interviews and reconstructed scenes. In addition, the new photography needed to complement the archive material. It also had to give every episode a consistent visual identity. Therefore, I used controlled lighting, considered compositions and purposeful camera movement to support each story.

A Distinct Visual Approach

Contributor interviews required a balance of authority and intimacy. For example, the lighting and framing needed to reflect the scale of each story without overwhelming the contributor. Meanwhile, the dramatic sequences demanded a more atmospheric approach. They needed energy and visual detail while remaining grounded in factual storytelling.

Music documentaries combine careful research with emotionally engaging storytelling. As a result, strong cinematography helps connect those elements and makes complex histories easier to follow. My approach supported the editorial direction while giving the production flexible material for the final edit.
