About James Melrose – UK Director of Photography (DOP)

I’m James Melrose, a UK-based Director of Photography (DOP) specialising in cinematic visuals for television, documentaries, branded content and commercial productions. With over a decade of experience, I help directors and producers bring stories to life through compelling, emotionally resonant cinematography.

Based in the North of England and working across Manchester, Leeds, Newcastle and London, I’ve shot productions for broadcasters including BBC, Channel 4, and Amazon Prime as well as independent films and brand campaigns. My style blends naturalistic lighting, documentary-style observation, and narrative-driven composition.

From handheld observational work to polished studio shoots, I tailor my approach to match each project’s tone and vision. I often use modern digital cinema cameras paired with vintage glass to balance technical precision with cinematic texture.

Collaboration is at the heart of my process. Whether I’m working with a seasoned director or an emerging creative team, I aim to build a strong visual language that supports the story. My influences include the work of Roger Deakins, Bradford Young, and the raw intimacy of documentary photographers like Nan Goldin.

Outside of shooting, I’m committed to mentoring emerging talent and supporting inclusive production practices in the film and TV industry.

James is also the managing director of Tomorrow’s Creative, a video production company.
